RENOVATIONS
When a mid-west general contractor was awarded the contract to renovate a seventeen story hotel in center
city Philadelphia, the challenges were many:
- Receive product from many different suppliers requiring a mix of material handling equipment and
storage applications to suit their needs in one central location
- Provide instant visibility on inventory so items needed to satisfy work flow by sub-contractors could be
requested on a room by room basis
- Deliver daily to the work site without loading docks
LVL received carpet, tile, granite counter tops, wall covering, furniture, fixtures and small appliances with
product specific material handling equipment.
As LVL received product, the on-line inventory was immediately updated. The customer was able to monitor
receipts and order product to support planned daily assignments
LVL made space available to installers to prep product before shipping
LVL delivered the product using trailers and straight trucks with lift gates
The project was completed on time and came in under budget.
SEASONAL PROGRAM – FLEX SPACE
A major manufacturer of children products was on the brink of consolidating and expanding its distribution
activities. Yet the timing of expiring leases and the availability of a new facility did not coincide with the
arrival of 400 ocean containers to support “Back to School” and “Christmas” sales campaigns. They did not
want an additional lease. They did not want to pay for space that may not be used, but wanted all product in
one location that could be fully integrated into their existing distribution channels.
LVL through its resources found a suitable, secured third party facility that was available as flex space,
staffed it and managed the product supporting the two programs. Starting with 25,000 square feet,
expanding to 75,000 square feet at the peak and then contracting to 20,000 square feet, the company was
able to absorb the additional 1.5 million cases of finished goods and raw materials seamlessly into their
supply chain efficiently.
SEASONAL PROGRAM – CUSTOMER SITE
After managing a Christmas full case pick program for a large mass merchandiser in LVL facilities for many
years, this customer acquired additional warehouse space to support its expanding retail base. At the
present time, they had enough marginal space to support a full case pick program for Halloween and
Christmas. Since the results in the past were outstanding, they opted to not make any changes and invited
LVL to come into their facility to manage the two programs.
With the ability to expand and contract staffing to complete daily picks and the floor loading of trailers with
16,000 to 25,000 cartons each day, LVL met their daily requirements with a level of accuracy exceeding
99.9%. With the increased dock activity, LVL was also able to provide a dedicated yard spotter to keep
trailers rotating in and out of doors. With a fixed cost per case picked and loaded, there were no surprises
and both projects were completed on time and within budget. Over 840,000 cases were picked and loaded
in a 40 day period.
